Oh wow! I miss everything about this photo. Conrail, the 1970's, the Freedom we had, the Javelin. I was only 3 years old, but I do remember the era vividly. Thanks for sparking some great memories of my childhood with this glance back to the past.

Don, just found this gem of a photo, and I had just turned 10 in April of '77. This photo takes me back too: the last few runs of the "Freedom Train" and the early days of Conrail, seeing a caboose on the rear of trains, what memories. However, I must disagree with your statement (Don't try this today unless you like to sleep in jail): One can still do this today if you know where you can set up a camp along a mainline, as long as you are not on railroad property. There are still areas out there where one can repeat this scene, although it would still be "How not to get a good night's sleep!" Thanks for posting this one.
