Looks like the first car is a steel coil car; it carries big sheets of steel rolled into a cylindrical shape, and then carried under the hood of the car. Without the hood, the car looks like a slightly sunk-in bottomed flat car.

I love telephoto shots sandwiched between poles like this. Great mix of liveries - not often BNSF put NS units on the point. First vehicle looks like a steel carrier - there are some similar ones running about in the UK.
