Because couplers are far from shiny when they are new. And its illegal to paint them.

Hey its a wave of the future on thie train. The North American Railroad looks so good with these 3 paint schemes. With all the other trains on the CN in Southern Ontario, it sure was a North American Railroad type of day. :-p

Couplers come finished with rust to protect them against oxidation of the iron in the steel.

I love that photo. I am from Freeport, IL and the CN owns the line. Me and my friends that also love trains would to see CN runs a few of those through here. Though there are only two merchandise trains a day that come through here, me and the rest of my crew hope on seeing one or two. Once again, nice photo. Love the GEVO behind it! Big BNSF fan!
