It is 16:30 (4:30 pm) and the sun is about to drop "into" the Pacific Ocean as Amtrak Pacific Surfliner 581 makes its last stop on its way from San Diego to Los Angeles. In the foreground is Amtrak "Superliner" 34967, reassigned, repainted and renumbered (from AMTK 34067) for service on the Surfliners, and also wearing the name "Sycamore Grove" for this service. (This car formerly wore the paint scheme and this name for service on northern California's San Joaquin and Capitol Corridor trains, too, with the same number but different paint for those trains … but saw service on the Surfliners for a time, too, before receiving this scheme.)
The ninety-five-year-old Santa Fe passenger station, now serving Amtrak and Metrolink, is batched in the golden glow of the day's last light.
