| Slip-Slide Season.
The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) laser train is seen rounding the curve at Floral Park Station, about to merge onto the Main Line from the Hempstead Branch. MP15AC no.s 166 and 158 bookend converted M3 cars E901 and E902, which were outfitted with laser technology to remove leaf residue from the rails. This residue - known as pectin - is left behind when fallen leaves are crushed and causes the rails to become slippery, which can lead to "slip-slide" conditions that affect braking ability and cause flat spots on train wheels. |
