Windy, rainy Carcross. After turning on the balloon loop just north of Carcross Station, YT, the White Pass & Yukon Route's Mikado #73 takes her passenger train back south across the bridge spanning the canal between Bennett Lake and Nares Lake (MP 67.4), headed back toward Skagway in a wind-blown rain. In the very early days of the White Pass & Yukon, around the turn of the 20th Century, this town was known as Caribou Crossing, but in 1904, was simply shortened to "Carcross." This is the only town of any size between Skagway, AK and Whitehorse, YT. Both the railroad and the Klondike Highway pass through here.
This image was captured during a September 2025 photo shoot on Alaska's White Pass & Yukon Route, which featured the line's only remaining steam locomotive, that being the 1947 Baldwin #73, seen here.
