A Spectacular Crepuscular!
Southern Pacific Railroad began construction on a new 560-acre railroad hump yard in the cities of Colton, Fontana and Rialto in 1971, and it was dedicated on July 19, 1973. (It was in service before that date, of course.)
This yard became the property of Union Pacific on September 11, 1996, when UP gained control of Southern Pacific Rail Corporation, which included the Southern Pacific Transportation Company, Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, and St. Louis Southwestern Railway. (What is it about bad things happening on that date?)
At 6:05 pm (18:05) on a November evening, an impressive sunset gives the yard a beautiful appearance as the fading light reflects off the well-used rails, combined with the illuminated switch indicators – along with the headlights of an eastbound freight train approaching on the UP's Alhambra Sub. (Colton, California – November 15, 2016)
