Seven years ago, there was even more snow on the Furka mountain route between Realp and Tiefenbach in the area of the Steffenbach bridge than this year. In mid-May, the gorge was still buried meters deep with avalanche snow when preparations began to rebuild the bridge. The 36-metre-long and 17-metre-high steel bridge is folded down in the autumn and reassembled in the spring to ensure that the avalanches have a clear path. A well-coordinated team is needed to dismantle and reassemble the bridge over the course of a day.
