A Grand Entrance.
R62A car 2271 (Bombardier, 1984-1987) is seen leading a Bronx-bound 1 train into 168th St Station. The Broadway-7th Avenue Line at this point was built in a deep mined tunnel with large stations that have vaulted ceilings. The stations were only built for 5-car trains, however, and when stations throughout the IRT system were lengthened to handle 10-car trains, less-expensive construction was used and the vaulted ceilings were not continued. This had the fortuitous benefit of maintaining the architectural details on the station portal, which may or may not have been kept if the full station cross-section was extended.
