Remarks & Notes
Putting #2 away - Part 2: The transfer table. For many decades, the Cog Railway's steam locomotives have resided in the row of stalls you see to the left, behind the locomotive. They are transported from the main line to their stall on a transfer table. Here, you see MWRC #2 "Ammonoosuc" on that transfer table, which has been positioned in front of a stall. The locomotive is just beginning to back up under her own power. Normally, this is an easy operation, but today, with one rear cylinder out due to a malfunction earlier in the day, the Reverse Steam Valve will not move the engine properly. The crew actually had to adjust the valve timing on the forward cylinders to 180 degrees so that the Forward Steam Valve would function like the Reverse Steam Valve. This was done just prior to pulling the engine onto the transfer table. If you observe the construction of the transfer table, you'll see that the "track" on which it runs is the very same Marsh System Cog Rack, on which the railway itself runs. Everything you see here is about as simple and as practical as can be....and it was all designed and built right here at the base of Mt. Washington.
