Cycles of Life. When starting the SD70ACu program, Norfolk Southern purchased 100 ex-Union Paciifc SD9043MACs units in September 2014 from EMD/Progress Rail and 10 more from CEFX in June 2016. On July 1, 2016, a visit to Cresson Steel in Cresson, PA shows the cab of NS 7320 (née-UP 8200, 1/1998) sitting in a field of waiting for the scrapper’s torch. As part of the rebuild program, a new widenose cab was installed on the completed unit. On October 22, 2020, Norfolk Southern announced that this would be one of the 46 units put up for sale, slightly more than 5 years after the first completed SD70ACu rolled out of NS’s Altoona, Pennsylvania Juniata Locomotive Shop.
