On Christmas Day 1998, a westbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight pops out of Snowshed 12 just east of Essex during a light snowfall. Snowsheds still protecting the BNSF right-of-way over Marias Pass were all originally constructed of Douglas Fir by Great Northern Railway.
