This shot of a Utah Ry. loaded coal train is the fourth in a series of this same train I’ve posted here on Railpictures. I started by following the empty train as it rolled eastward down Utah’s Price River Canyon and got my first shot as it entered Helper passing under an ex. D&RGW signal bridge.(image 720441) My second shot of it was as it turned off of the main line Green River Sub. on to the Castle Valley Industrial Spur to get to the Savage coal loadout. Once loaded, the train will be taken west over Soldier Summit to Provo, UT for interchange to the Union Pacific who will forward it to the IPP Power Plant near Delta, Utah. By this time the sky looked pretty threatening. (image 532334) This shot is the third in this series and shows the train fighting its way up the 2.4% grade towards Soldier Summit at the Kyune reverse curves. It takes 5 head end engines and another 6 manned helpers cut in mid train to get over the hill; a total of 38,500 hp. My 4th and final shot of this series shows the train as it tops Soldier Summit. (image720688) I especially like the fact that all of the head end power is still in the traditional Utah Ry. grey and red colors; no G&W orange today.
