Here comes Union Pacific’s SD70M #4404 hustling east at Knolls, Utah. Knolls is out on the Bonneville Salt Flats 80 miles west of Salt Lake City on the ex. Western Pacific 7th. Subdivision, now the Union Pacific Shafter Sub. This train is “Local 8” according to the dispatcher transmission I heard on my scanner. Local 8 originated 40 straight and dead level miles west of here at Wendover, on the Utah-Nevada state line. It’s next stop is at Clive, where those containers of “dirty dirt” from a power plant demolition near North Platte, Nebraska will be dropped at the disposal facility located there. The wind was blowing pretty hard out here on the salt flats today. If you look closely, you can see evidence of blowing sand/salt at the edges of the image.
