Everything is bigger in Texas. Here's a rear-quarter view of the massive Texas & Pacific 610, a 1927 Lima 2-10-4, seen here on display in the yard at the Texas State Railroad in Palestine, Texas under late afternoon sun. This brutish oil-burner was one of 15 such locomotives, which operated on the Texas & Pacific Railway between the mid-1920s and the early 1950s. After 25 years of retirement, she was brought back to life for a few years in the mid-1970s, first as power for the American Freedom Train during the bi-centennial year, and then as an excursion engine used by Southern Railway. Alas, that second career was a short one and she's been a static display for just about the last 40 years. The last survivor of her type, there are no plans for future operation, but she is thankfully housed indoors most of the time, and periodically rolled outside for folks to enjoy.
