Remarks & Notes
Sunrise at Ferguson's. DRGW K-27 Mudhen #453 steps across Ferguson's Trestle at MP 285.87, just moments after sunrise, hauling a freight westbound toward Chama and Durango, via Cumbres Pass. This scene was just one of many re-created back in the fall of 2018, on a photo excursion organized by the Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. This particular charter re-created a Rio Grande Southern freight, headed up by K-27 #463, disguised as #453, a locomotive which was loaned to the RGS, but never painted in their livery.

The wooden trestle seen here was originally constructed in the late 1800s. It has acquired the unofficial names of "Ferguson's Trestle", or "Hangman's Trestle" for a man from Antonito, CO, who was allegedly hanged there for some unknown crime. The story line is that apparently, the folks who conducted the hanging commandeered a locomotive and ran it west until they encountered the first structure from which a man could be hanged without his feet touching the ground. How true that story is depends upon who you talk to. It is known that the original bridge was used in 1988 for the filming of a made-for-TV movie called "Where the Hell's that gold", when a planned explosion went awry and set fire to the bridge, destroying it. It was replaced with a temporary span within days, and was re-built to original specifications the following year.

Landscape photography is difficult due to the challenge of combining good light and good scenery. Good railroad photography enters another level of complexity since it requires the first two while there is a train in view.

A continuously growing album of photos that IMHO reveal the awesome and seldom-seen beauty of the railroad world from the dimming of day to dawn's early light! From dusk to dawn, trains roll on! (I'm still finding gems of sunset-to-sunrise surprises!)
