Remarks & Notes
This week the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, Colorado added a Denver & Rio Grande Western tunnel motor survivor (UP patched 9871 and former DRGW 5401) to its impressive collection. After being in storage at the nearby Coors Brewing Company for the past 8 years, it was moved by rail and then snap track for the last mile to the museum. It currently sits on display next to Denver & Rio Grande Western 683 (2-8-0) which was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1890. The former DRGW 5401 was built in 1980, making the pair 90 years apart. Now the museum, along with its impressive overall collection, has two rare DRGW engines; 683 which happens to be the only surviving Denver & Rio Grande Western standard gauge steam engine, and 5401/UP 9871, which happens to be one of the few surviving DRGW tunnel motors (of the 73 purchased) and I believe the only surviving DRGW flagged SD40T2 in Colorado.
