A story of old and young beasts

The old beast on the right has just uncoupled from the newest SNCF super-beast on the left, which is the Sud-Est TGV #16. This is the beginning of a "Chantier" section (means "works") where the new Paris-Lyon high speed line is still under construction and train movements are organized according to regulations specific to these work zones. In fact on that day, it was more of a test zone, as this is where the world speed record would be broken by the mighty orange thing on the left (see here). The old diesel was required to bring the TGV 16 here because the catenaries were not yet electrified everywhere.

The CC 65500s nicknamed “Dakotas” and powered by a 1300 KW Sulzer were built in 1955/56 by CAFL-CEM primarily for service on the circular freight line around Paris, the “Grande Ceinture” (large belt line). Later, they were intensely used on high speed line construction work trains.
