Just as the sun clears the horizon to the southeast, Santa Fe 5019 East roars through Essex, CA, with five EMDs for power. The manifest is climbing the western slope of Goffs Hill. A few minutes behind this train is 800 East, a stack train with four red and silver GE C40-8Ws on the point.
