On a hot morning in August 1973, Santa Fe 5665 East meets an SP westbound in the hole at the Loop. The SP's conductor, which at this time rode in the caboose, will give the Santa Fe a roll-by. Both Santa Fe and SP continued to buy 20-cylinder EMD's even after the scare caused by bad welds in their prime movers' A-frames supporting the crankshaft (which EMD quickly corrected).
