For the first time in many weeks, January 20, 2018 was a beautiful sunny and mild day in Northern New England. One could be outside for more than five minutes without feeling like he or she was deteriorating just from the bitter cold. Pan Am Railways was operating its SAPPI-3 as usual between Hinckley and Waterville, Maine. GP9s 77 and 52 had recently been called back to road service on the branch. Because of this good fortune, fans from all over were out to catch them in action. Crossing over the outlet of Martin Stream in the Hinckley section of Fairfield, I found myself smiling and wondering how many miles these Heritage beauties have accumulated over the decades. Currently, they are the only two GP9s in service out of three total on Pan Am.
