For the Empire Builder, 2017 is going out like a lion. After an engine failure prompted the addition of a BNSF SD70MAC, cold weather hampered things even further. At just over 7 hours south of on-time, a tardy builder makes a daylight run across Minnesota. The days temps started out at nearly 30 below, and at the time of the picture, hadn't improved much.
