| 54" for Norden…between 00:00 on Monday January 9th and 00:00 Tuesday January 10th 54" of fresh snow fell at Norden at the top of Union Pacific's Sierra crossing. While not the most snow recorded in a 24-hour period (top 2 or 3) it did showcase Union Pacific's snow fighters, who kept the Sierra open to commerce under the ever growing snow pack. A few days after the big dump a eastbound Union Pacific manifest climbs through Norden moments from entering the west portal of 'the big hole' (tunnel 41). In the distance is what remains of the old Norden snow shed complex, the abandoned #1 track right of way can be seen (buried by snow) veering off towards right center as well as the #1 track (right) and turntable (center) snow shed extensions. |
