Southern Pacific 4449 is working hard as it climbs Vincent Hill on its way to Los Angeles. I’ve read that the crew came very close to cutting in the tender booster to crest the grade. That’s a sight that I wish that I could have witnessed. Some of my all-time favorite images, taken by the late Bob Collins, were of doubleheaded Lehigh & New England locos hauling tonnage up the Summit grade with tender boosters cut in. The extra plumes of steam exhaust from the boosters added another dimension to the visual, and presumably auditory, experience.
