Remarks & Notes
I have long thought about getting a good photo at this location. Over the years I have had more than a few chances and captured a few decent photos but I always felt there was a better shot. It is a difficult spot operationally for the railroad as the train departs Whittier, Alaska through the shared rail/road Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel. This creates an operational headache as the railroad can only depart either at 20 after the hour or 50 after the hour, as cars enter Whittier on the half hour and depart Whittier on the hour and they need time to vent the tunnel. So it often occurs with these big freights that they will miss their window of opportunity and by the time they do come through it is either dark or clouds have moved in taking your photo opportunity with it. Not so on this day as a heavy 120N exits the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, just out of the picture to the right, and enters Bear Valley, crosses Placer Creek before entering Portage Tunnel as they head for Anchorage on a great day. Cross that shot off my list, until winter anyway!

Good Light, Good Scenery, and a Train

Landscape photography is difficult due to the challenge of combining good light and good scenery. Good railroad photography enters another level of complexity since it requires the first two while there is a train in view.
