Detroit Edison bought a fleet of U30C’s and SD40’s to ensure that Penn Central would not delay coal shipments to their electric generating stations due to unavailable or unreliable power. Here one of each is assisted by two Conrail SD’s as they take a train of empties to the Bailey mine. The Detroit Edison trains, when loaded, often had well over one hundred of DE’s unique 140-ton hoppers, resulting in train weights approaching a whopping 20,000 tons.
