On a hazy day in October 1977, a Santa Fe eastbound roars slowly upgrade at Woodford with an SP and Santa Fe manifest in the hole in the long siding. A U-boat in 5936's consist is sending a plume of exhaust sky-high as it battles the stiff grade. At this time, the short siding (closest to us) still had switches to the main line at both ends. Later it became a stub siding. The Santa Fe power in the foreground consists of a light helper heading back to Bakersfield coupled ahead of a westbound's road power. Note the trackside indicators between the main line and long siding; these were normally off to the side of the right of way.
