A pair of helper sets sit in Tehachapi, California, on July 5th, 1998. On the left is Southern Pacific SD40M-2 8650, built by EMD in February 1967 as Chicago & North Western SD45 917. By this day, the SP was a "fallen flag" and is not property of the Union Pacific following the merger two years earlier. On the adjacent track is a visitor from the east, which found itself in helper service for a day or two - CSX Dash 8-40CW 7781, built by GE in July 1992.
