An Amtrak Surfliner train is approaching downtown Los Angeles, passing under the 6th Street Viaduct. The historic highway bridge suffers from alkali-silica reaction and is rotting from the inside out and will need to be replaced; no practical way has been found to save the structure. The bridge is expected to close in late 2015, with demolition to follow shortly thereafter.
