On a very cold and snowy January 1984 day in Wisconsin finds a quiet stillness at the engine facility of Chicago and North Western’s Butler Yard. Two Alco C-628’s find respite from lugging ore due to the frozen Great Lakes, are helping out with regular freight hauling to the south and are surrounded by the usual gathering of EMD GP7s. Tiny, icy snowflakes filter down, highlighting anything remotely horizontal. The normally greasy tracks are cloaked in winter white. Hard to believe this was thirty years ago…
