Remarks & Notes
A weekend commuter train moves past the original Matawan train station built by the NY&LB Railroad in the 1870's. The NY&LB had the option of routing the line through either Matawan or Keyport. They made an announcement that they would route the line through which ever town purchased more of its company stock. Matawan did not have direct access to the waterways (via the Raritan Bay) as Keyport did. And so in the end Matawan residents purchased substantially more stock and received the rail line, which today is the NJ Transit North Jersey Coast Line (NJCL).
