Amtrak in the Feather River Canyon! Amtrak 11 was making just another ordinary trip south through Oregon when the news came in; a Union Pacific manifest train had derailed just north of Dunsmuir and shut down the Shasta Route. The train arrived ontime into Klamath Falls, but had nowhere to go. After a long time of waiting, it was decided the train could not wait for the Shasta Route to reopen and no buses were available, therefore the train was forced to make a detour via the BNSF Gateway Subdivision and the Feather River Canyon. Many problems can arise during an unscheduled detour like this making a late train even later. Here, running around ten hours late, Amtrak's southbound Coast Starlight train poses in front of the iconic double bridges at Pulga, California.
Running daily between Seattle and Los Angeles, this train offers running alongside the Pacific Ocean and through the Cascade Mountains. It has been one of Amtrak's long-distance success stories.
