After having lugged a heavy coal train from Bluefield and uncoupling, GP18 910 bangs across the diamond heading for the Roanoke engine terminal on a drizzly April afternoon. Perhaps only on the N&W would one see an aging four axle road switcher lead a a trio of younger, bigger, stronger six axle units on the main line. The crossing is the Ex-Virginian and the N&W to Winston Salem. Just visible along the right side of Winston Salem line are the "Lost Engines of Roanoke" which against all odds have now found preservation homes.
