Union Pacific #844 blasts upgrade along the ledge at Cape Horn. Here the original Transcontinental Railroad hugs a granite cliff face above the American River, hundreds of feet below. This modern yet historic mainline was carved out of the mountainside using nothing more than hand tools and dynamite.
