A year before DRGW declined to join Amtrak, its Rio Grande Zephyr was running with just six cars as it was on this day about to leave Byers Canyon heading west. By this time of year, too, the spring runoff on the Colorado River was dropping. The D&RGW and now UP follow the Colorado for 238 miles, the longest any one RR in America follows the same river.
