Sweet Home Chicago….almost Laying along the inactive former Missouri Pacific line to Pueblo, a pair if rails from a steel mill of the Midwest proudly display their branding and December 1979 rolling date. While the name on the rail’s web says Illinois, these rails were actually rolled at US Steel’s Gary Works located in Indiana. The Gary Works began production of rail in 1909 and was the largest rail mill in the world with a daily production of 4000 tons of 80lb rail in a twenty four hour period. While today the Gary Works remains US Steel’s largest manufacturing plant, rail production at this mill ceased in 1980s.
