One of the more unusual Amtrak California Zephyr power consists I have witnessed leads train #5 west up the 2.4% grade through Price Canyon at Lynn. I was chasing trains with my dad on this day, and he was pretty tickled to have a Rio Grande SD40T-2 on the point of #5 for Father's Day. After the D&RGW acquired the SP, 5412 would be painted scarlet red and gray with speed lettering. By 2001 (after the SP-UP merger), the 5412 was retired and sold to the Pacific Harbor Line in the Los Angeles area.
