Remarks & Notes
A mixed freight makes its way down toward Fulton Yard in Richmond behind a pair of veteran Dash 8s. The viaduct on which the train is traveling is 3 miles long, connecting the Peninsula and the Rivanna Subdivisions along the James River. It forms the top level of Richmond's Triple Crossing. The bascule bridge in the foreground is part of the NS (formerly Southern) line to West Point, Virginia, and the body of water it crosses is the eastern end of the James River and Kanawha Canal. While the NS line is still active the bridge is now welded closed, as the locks at the eastern end of the canal are no longer functional. The western part of the canal's projected path became the route followed by the C&O's water level line along the James River to the coal fields of West Virginia.
