Remarks & Notes
In the shadow of her own dark plume, the Mount Washington Railway Company's Locomotive #10, "Kroflite" takes the B-Section of the 9AM excursion up Cold Spring Hill on a chilly fall morning. The position of the low-angle sun and the drifting smoke and steam plumes made for some very interesting lighting effects on this train. The 70-passenger coach is in full sun, while the locomotive gets only light filtered by the plumes. Note how the gold lettering on the tender seems to glow in the filtered light. Number 10's Fireman was nice enough to light the cab interior for me as he threw another scoop of coal on the blow-torch-like fire in front of him. Beyond this train and up the hill a few hundred yards, you can see the A-Section, clawing its way up the steep grade toward Waumbek Tank. Alas, scenes like this are probably never to be repeated. While the Mt. Washington Railway does retain 3 operable steam engines, you'll almost never see more than one hot.
