Remarks & Notes

The Orange Blossom Special operated Between New York and Miami (with a section that served Tampa/St. Petersburg) only during the winter vacation season. The classic heavyweight consist had been equipped with air conditioning throughout and the Mountain-type steam locomotives which had once pulled the train between Richmond and Jacksonville had been retired in favor of Diesel power by 1939. Seaboard E-4A 3003 was built by Electro Motive Corporation in 1938, one of 14 2000 Horsepower A units and 5 B units purchased to replace steam power on the Orange Blossom Special and the Silver Meteor. These units were the only E4 models built by Electro Motive. This view from my collection shows EMC 3003 leading the A-B-A 6000 horsepower diesel powered Orange Blossom Special somewhere in the Sunshine State in 1939.
