Remarks & Notes
Twilight Surprise - I was exploring this interesting industrial line after 9 PM on the longest day of the year and was not expecting to see anything. Much to my delight while cruising down Shilshole Ave. beside the tracks what should appear in the golden glow of twilight. Let's hope this line has a few more surprises left in her and that the sun isn't setting on this operation just quite yet. Formed in 1997 when the BNSF was ready to abandon the last three miles of it's historic ex NP line around the north shore of Lake Union and Lake Washington to Woodinville. Dating to 1885 the line was severed as a through route in 1971 and by 1997 only three miles on the Seattle end were left. Saved by a plucky group of shippers it has survived for the past 13 years, though lately only one shipper remains. Here the tiny little ancient EMD is rearranging cement hoppers for that sole customer along the side of the road. #98 stenciled with the name "Ballard's Lil Beaver" on her side has a fabulous history all her own. Built in 1940 for the Milwaukee Road she spent the latter part of her career on the MILW's isolated trackage on the Olympic Peninsula. She survived on the peninsula working for the Seattle & North Coast and then the Olympic Railway which operated the last vestige of railroading on the Peninsula as a terminal railroad for the Port Townsend Paper Company handling traffic to and from the barge slip. After 70 years, she is not ready to roll into the sunset just yet...
