Remarks & Notes |
Two former Conrail EMD locomotives that are now part of the Norfolk Southern SD40-2 team take a well-deserved break over Thanksgiving. Unit #3411 was built in 1979 with roster #6499 and #3385 was built in 1978 with roster #6451.
EMD introduced the SD40-2 locomotives in January 1972 to thwart off competition from the General Electric U30C and the ALSO MLW M630 units. Although not considered a high-horsepower locomotive with 3,000 HP, the SD40-2 units were very reliable and economical and ultimately proved their worthiness during the oil crisis 1973 – 1980 when many of the competitor’s products consumed excessive amounts of diesel fuel.
