| A mere three days after the autumnal equinox and just about an hour north of Chama, the morning train to Antonito encounters the stark reality of life in the Colorado Rockies. It does indeed snow in September. An early season storm the day before has left the ground and the trees near Cumbres Pass covered with a 3 inch blanket of new snow. Old 488 is working pretty hard on this four percent grade. She's got a heavy train and with both 487 and 489 in for maintenance this day, she's got no helper. Although she was barking up a storm and slipping the tires a bit, she made Cumbres Pass about 10 minutes after this photo was taken. |
