Long before Top Fuel and Pro-Stock were ever thought of, manly gear-heads were settling scores with more primitive muscle machines. Pictured here is a drag race between Shay Locomotives some place in rural West Virginia. In this particular event, low-qualifier Shay #11 had track choice and had chosen the middle track, which had proven fast all day. When the flag dropped however, Shay #5 got the hole-shot and managed to hold off Shay #11's top-end charge. Shay #6 spun the tires on the starting line and was never a factor. Top speed for the winner was a blistering 12 mph. ET was a near record 1:30 for the quarter mile!
For aficianados of geared steam engines, it's "almost heaven." Here are some scenes from the park's annual Railfan Weekends, as well as some private charters.
