Remarks & Notes |
Even a train of this magnitude and importance is dwarfed by the massive Susquehanna River bridge, opened by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1906. The special that carried President-elect Barack Obama and Joe Biden was meant to mimic Abraham Lincoln's train trip to his inauguration in 1861. However, there was no railroad bridge over the Susquehanna until 1866 (the piers of which can be seen in front of the current bridge), so Lincoln had to cross the river by ferryboat. |
