Tanking at 3,800 MSL Not many railfans get to watch this operation....from outside the train. It's a tough hike of about a mile in distance and 1,100 ft vertical from Marshfield Station to the Waumbek Tank...and about 1/3 of the way to the summit. Once at the site however, you'll witness steam meeting steam every hour...to my knowledge, the only place in the US where this happens every day. Here, #2 "Ammonoosuc" fills its 700 gallon tank as the Engineer checks the running gear before pressing for the summit. On the far side of the tank, #10 "Kroflite" pauses to wait for another upcoming train before descending to Marshfield Station. High above this scene, an interesting confluence of aircraft can be seen...a high altitude jet and a glider riding ridge lift just above the summit.
