Here's a close-up shot of MWRC #3 "Agiocochook" going full-bore up the initial grade on the Mt. Washington Cog Railway. Watching this little engine work at close range is very much a multi-sensory experience. At full-bore, she makes a blistering 3 mph, but she sounds like she's doing 100. With 4 cylinders pouring out exhaust steam, there's no chugging, just a steady roar. The velocity of the stack gasses pushes the plume over 100 ft into the sky at times and draft on the fire is so strong that there's a steady rain of cinders within 50 ft of the tracks. Even if you're several hundred feet away, you know instantly when the fireman opens the firebox door. Oh, and you'll be smelling (and tasting) the coal smoke long after she's gone by.
