First, some background: Mormon Rocks in San Bernardino County, California, are stunning, steeply tilted Miocene-age sandstone formations located near the intersection of I-15 and Hwy 138 in the Cajon Pass. Named for Mormon settlers who passed through in the 1850s, this site offers a popular 1-mile (1.6 km) interpretive loop trail, scrambling opportunities, and views of the San Andreas Fault.
Threading its way through the Mormon Rocks is BNSF Railway intermodal train S-LPCLBE1-17L, heading for the Port of Long Beach CA from Logistics Park in Chicago IL, one of many, many trains passing through the Pass every day. Powering this train are BNSF ET44C4s 3889 and 3912, Dash 9-44CW 1075 and ES44C4 6552. This train has about 106 miles (170.5 km) left in its journey.
