| A westbound Canadian Pacific train battles a blizzard as it rolls across west central Minnesota in February 2011. This experience made me understand how people have become lost in these kinds of conditions. There are stories of folks freezing to death close to their barn or farmhouse because they became so disoriented just walking between the two to check on their livestock. Some farmers would tie a rope between the two that they could then hold on to and follow to avoid this fate. The snowfall wasn't this intense when I walked a hundred yards or so into a field from my car to take the picture. The snow obviously got a lot worse by the time the train arrived, and when I turned around, I couldn't see where my car was. If it hadn't been for the railroad tracks that I could follow back to the road, I would've had a hard time knowing which way to walk. I don't venture out into these conditions as much anymore, but it can be an exhilarating experience! |
