| BR 70013 'Oliver Cromwell' arrives at Leicester North with the 2A03 0915 from Loughborough during the Great Central Railways 'Winter Steam Gala'. BR 70013 carries an 1T57 headcode which is a reference to the 1T57 'Fifteen Guinea Special' which was the last main-line passenger train to be hauled by steam locomotive power on British Rail on 11th August 1968. The train departed Liverpool Lime St for Manchester Victoria at 09:10 hauled by LMS 45110. There, LMS 45110 was replaced by BR 70013 Oliver Cromwell – the last steam locomotive to be overhauled by BR – and departed for Carlisle at 11:06. LMS 44781 and 44871 double-headed the train back to Manchester Victoria via the Settle - Carlisle line and LMS 45110 took the train back to Liverpool Lime St. The 'Fifteen Guinea Special' was so named because of the high cost of tickets for the rail tour (15 guineas = £15 15s). Guinea prices were normally only used for luxury items or professional fees and ticket prices had been inflated due to the high demand to travel on the last B.R. steam-hauled mainline train. |
